Easter Monday, April 1, 1929, brought the annual egg roll to the White House grounds, where children rolled dyed eggs down the sloping South Lawn. The custom is usually traced to 1878, when President Rutherford B. Hayes opened the lawn to local children, and it became a yearly tradition in the capital. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose commercial work documented the city's public life in the 1920s. It shows the Easter gathering as a fixed part of Washington's calendar, a rare chance to see the presidential grounds filled with families.
