Crowds rolling painted eggs across the grounds of the United States Capitol set this picture apart from the more familiar White House egg roll. Underwood & Underwood, the New York firm known for its stereoviews and news photographs, made the print sometime between 1920 and 1932, a period when Easter gatherings on the Capitol lawn drew families from across Washington. The image shows how the Capitol grounds served as a public space for holiday play between the world wars.
