The prize basket is the focus of this April 2, 1923, photograph from the White House Easter egg roll, with a group of boys gathered around it. The event on the White House grounds dated to 1878, when President Rutherford B. Hayes opened the lawn to local children, and by the 1920s it was a familiar part of Washington's spring calendar. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded Washington life and official events in this period, made the picture, which shows how the day drew children and their families to the grounds.
