The White House lawn was the setting on April 2, 1923, the Monday after Easter, when children gathered for the annual egg roll, a tradition that dates to the Hayes administration in 1878. This print comes from the National Photo Company, whose photographers, including Herbert E. French, documented Washington life in the 1910s and 1920s. The company's work is valuable today for its record of public ceremonies and everyday city scenes, and the original glass negative is held in the Library of Congress collection.
