Dated March 3, 1913, this picture belongs to the Woman Suffrage Procession, a march organized by Alice Paul and the National American Woman Suffrage Association, held the day before Woodrow Wilson's inauguration. Thousands of marchers moved down Pennsylvania Avenue, and many spectators in the crowds jeered and pushed them, forcing police and later Army cavalry to step in. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington street life and events in the 1910s, made the image, which is now held by the Library of Congress.
