Among the units returning from France, the First Division had one of the strongest records, having been among the first American divisions on the Western Front in 1917 and fighting at Cantigny and in the Meuse-Argonne. This photograph shows its homecoming parade in Washington, D.C., a city that turned out large crowds for returning troops. The record dates the picture to about 1918, though the division's major homecoming celebrations came after the armistice, so the date is approximate.
