Two young women, identified as Fay Christian and Kay Campion, pose beside a television set on display at the Seventh Annual Industrial Exposition in Washington, D.C. In 1931 television was still experimental, with few sets in private hands and pictures that were small, dim and flickering. Seeing one on a public show floor gave visitors an early look at a technology that would not reach most American homes until after World War II. The photograph was made by Underwood & Underwood, a commercial press photography firm, and its caption card dates it to October 26, 1931, though that date is unverified.
