A flag so large that a whole crew of men has to carry it leads this 1915 street scene in Washington, D.C. The marchers belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic, the fraternal organization of Union Civil War veterans founded in 1866. By 1915, about fifty years after the war, the surviving veterans were growing old, and their parades often drew crowds as a visible link to the conflict. The National Photo Company, which documented life in the capital in the early twentieth century, recorded the moment.
