Here the president himself carries the American flag at the head of a Preparedness Day parade in Washington, D.C., in 1916. The march was part of a nationwide push for a stronger military as the war in Europe drew closer to American affairs and tensions with Mexico ran high. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington's public life in the 1910s, made this image, and its scenes of parades and official occasions give a close view of how civic patriotism was staged before the United States entered World War I in 1917.
