Charles Kaufman & Sons was a clothing store at 431-33 Seventh Street Northwest, on one of the busiest commercial corridors in downtown Washington, D.C. The storefront is captured in a print from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of work that documented the city's streets and businesses in the early twentieth century, when Seventh Street was lined with department stores, shops, and offices. Photographs like this one were made as commercial views and postcards, so they preserve how a small street-level business presented itself to passersby. The date of about 1920 is an estimate based on the collection's dating.
