Charles McNary, a Republican senator from Oregon, is the subject of this portrait, which the Library of Congress dates to 1938. McNary served in the Senate from 1917 until his death in 1944, and by the late 1930s he was one of the most influential members of his party in Washington. He became the Senate minority leader in 1933 and was known for his skill at bargaining across party lines, a quality that made him a central figure during the New Deal years. The print is a useful record of a politician who spent much of his career shaping farm and natural resource policy from the Capitol.
