The house on F Street near 15th is tied to James Hoban, the Irish-born architect who won the competition to design the White House and spent much of his later life in Washington. This 1874 watercolor shows the building roughly four decades after Hoban's death in 1831, so it records an older structure that had become part of a changing streetscape. Drawings like this one, made by later artists, are useful to historians because they document neighborhoods that were being rebuilt quickly as the capital grew after the Civil War.
