Labeled simply as the President's House, this view shows the executive residence in Washington, the building most people today call the White House. The record gives no date, and the only associated name is D.W. Kellogg & Co., a commercial print firm, so the exact year of the image is unconfirmed. James Hoban designed the residence, and John Adams became its first occupant in 1800. After British forces burned its interior in 1814, the building was rebuilt and whitewashed, which helps explain the name that stuck. Prints like this one circulated widely to show the capital's most recognizable building.
