The fountain and portico at the East Wing of the White House set this card apart from the many views of the executive mansion in the collection. The East Wing dates to the 1902 remodeling of the White House under Theodore Roosevelt, when offices were moved out of the main residence. The card was issued around 1907 by the Standard Scenic Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, a firm that sold stereographs for viewing through a stereoscope, a popular parlor entertainment of the period. Its paired images were meant to create a three-dimensional view of the grounds.
