Two women stand beside a blazing bonfire at the front gate of the White House in this print from about 1919, a scene that sets it apart from the many views of the pickets. The fire belonged to the National Woman's Party's Silent Sentinels, who had held vigil at the gates since January 1917. In February 1919 they burned copies of President Woodrow Wilson's speeches there to protest his stance on suffrage, and police repeatedly arrested demonstrators for it. The photograph was made by Harris & Ewing, a Washington studio whose work is part of the National Photo Company Collection.
