Taxicabs lined up behind the White House make this view of Washington, D.C., unusual, since the building is usually photographed from its public face. The print comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of work by a Washington studio that documented the city's streets, buildings, and daily life over several decades. Around 1921, automobiles were steadily replacing horse-drawn carriages in the capital, and the image captures a time when the motorcar was still new enough to be a subject worth recording on its own.
