The Washington Canal, also called the Washington City Canal, ran along the low ground at the foot of the capital's central district, and it shaped the city's early growth in ways few visitors today would expect. Built in the early 1800s to carry goods between the Potomac River and the Anacostia-linked waterways, it was later filled in and turned into a sewer and street corridor, becoming what is now Constitution Avenue. Its slow, polluted water and muddy banks made it a frequent subject for photographers documenting the city's changing waterfront.
