Few White House demonstrations of the early 1920s carried a demand as specific as the one on this picket's placards: amnesty for political prisoners. The caption card links the December 1, 1922 scene to women in politics, and the cause reached back to 1917, when suffragists picketing the White House were arrested and some were jailed at the Occoquan workhouse in Virginia. Picketing the executive mansion was then a relatively new tactic, and the National Photo Company's record shows how such protests were staged in public view. The original negative has deteriorated, so fine details of the signs and faces are limited.
