The Sherman was an apartment house at 1101 15th Street NW, on a busy commercial and residential stretch of northwest Washington, D.C. Its record gives the date as approximately 1920, and the print comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of work from a Washington commercial studio that documented the city's streets and buildings in the early twentieth century. Apartment buildings like this one spread through the capital in those decades as federal employment grew and many residents preferred rented flats to single-family houses. Photographs of such buildings show the street-facing facades, entrances, and ornament that defined the period's urban architecture.
