Ephrata Cloister, a group of historic buildings in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is the subject of this 1936 color lithograph, which promotes a visit to the site of an early German pietist community. Conrad Beissel founded the community in 1732, and its members lived a communal, largely celibate religious life while running a press, a paper mill, and a scriptorium that produced books and decorated fraktur, the illuminated lettering and drawings that the poster's subject headings name. The Federal Art Project issued the print during the Depression as part of a wider WPA effort to publicize American landmarks and encourage travel.
