This Federal Art Project poster invites viewers to visit the Ephrata Cloister in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Conrad Beissel, a German-born religious leader, founded the community in 1732, and its members lived in celibate communal households centered on prayer, hymn singing and manuscript work. The cataloged subjects also include fraktur, the decorative painted lettering and illumination that the Ephrata members produced. Signed in pencil by the artist, this color lithograph was made in 1936 to promote regional tourism as part of the Works Progress Administration's poster program.
