A heron is the focal creature in this 1936 poster, which pairs a wading bird with the idea of a zoo visit. The design was printed in color from woodblocks, a labor-intensive method that the Works Progress Administration's poster division used because it could produce many copies on a modest budget. Sponsored by the Federal theater Project, the poster was meant to be pasted on walls and storefronts to draw people to public events during the Depression. It shows how the program turned ordinary public attractions into bold, graphic advertising.
