Few WPA posters pair a zoo with a music program, and this one, designed by Philadelphia artist Hugh Stevenson in 1936, centers on an elephant and the Pennsylvania zoo setting. The Federal Music Project sponsored it, which suggests the Works Progress Administration used everyday public attractions to draw crowds to its programs. The poster is a color woodcut, a labor-intensive method that let its designers print bold shapes and flat areas of color cheaply. A date stamp on the back, August 1937, shows it was still in circulation about a year after it was made.
