Penguins are the unusual subject here, set against a Pennsylvania zoo in the 1930s, when a live penguin was still a draw for many visitors. The poster was issued under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, which hired artists to produce public announcements, and the Federal Writers Project sponsorship shows it was tied to the government's promotion of cultural outings. Its color woodcut technique gives the birds bold, simplified shapes, and the printed invitation to "Visit the zoo" reflects the New Deal effort to fill public places with affordable recreation.
