Here a canoe carries the subject, and the record ties it to Native American water travel in the years 1890 to 1910. Frederic Remington (1861–1909) was best known for his paintings, drawings and bronzes of the American West, and this print reproduces one of his paintings. Halftone printing, which broke a photograph or painting into tiny dots that presses could reproduce, let color images like this one reach magazines, books and homes in large numbers at the turn of the century. The title's emphasis on "explorers" invites viewers to think about how Remington framed Indigenous people as the skilled navigators of the continent's waterways.
