Charles M. Russell painted this scene in 1902, and it shows a confrontation between Sioux and Blackfeet, two peoples whose rivalry over hunting grounds on the northern plains led to many armed encounters. This color halftone is a reproduction made around 1910, when the image was deposited with the U.S. Copyright Office, which required a printed copy. Russell lived in Montana and spent time among Blackfeet people, and his paintings from this period helped shape popular images of the frontier West. Reproductions like this one carried his compositions to a far wider audience than the original canvas could reach.
