Titled simply *The Meeting*, this color halftone reproduces a 1910 painting by Charles M. Russell, the Montana artist who spent much of his life recording the Plains and its horses, riders, and Native peoples. The scene centers on a handshake between Native people, with horses in view, a gesture that suggests the uneasy but sometimes friendly contact between cultures in the late 1800s. Registered for copyright around 1911, the print shows how illustrated reproductions carried Russell's Western scenes into American homes well before his reputation as a major painter was firmly established.
