Charles M. Russell's 1903 painting of Custer's last fight was reproduced here as a photomechanical print, and this copy was deposited with the U.S. Copyright Office to secure copyright, which is why the Library of Congress holds it. The battle took place along the Little Bighorn River in Montana in June 1876, when Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and five companies of the 7th Cavalry were overwhelmed by a large force of Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors. Russell, a former cowboy who became one of the best-known painters of the American West, returned to the subject often, and his version reflects how the event was pictured in popular imagery of the early 1900s. Reproductions like this one carried such scenes into homes and schools long before the battle was studied in depth.
