Joseph Brant, the Mohawk leader known to colonists as Joseph Brant and here called "the Great Captain of the Six Nations," is the figure at the center of this mezzotint, a proof state with the inscriptions still written in by hand. The print reproduces a painting by George Romney, the English portraitist, and was published by J.R. Smith in 1779. Brant had traveled to England in 1776 and was received by British society, and portraits like this one helped shape how audiences in London saw a Native leader allied with the Crown during the Revolutionary War. Collectors still study it for that reason, as a window onto the period's politics and its images of Indigenous people.
