The Animas River gorge in the San Juan Mountains near Durango is the subject here, and the record also tags railroads, a reminder that the Denver and Rio Grande's narrow-gauge line ran up this canyon beginning in the early 1880s. By around 1900, the scenery had become a draw for travelers. The print is a photochrom, a color process that the Detroit Publishing Company used to turn photographs into lithographic prints, and its saturated hues made such views popular as souvenirs.
