Pike's Peak Avenue in Colorado Springs is the subject here, with the mountain it takes its name from rising at the far end of the street. The color comes from the photochrom process, which Detroit Publishing Company used to turn black-and-white photographs into hand-tinted-looking color prints for sale to tourists around 1898. Such views were popular souvenirs of the rail and resort towns that drew visitors to the Rockies in that era. The Library of Congress holds this example through a copyright deposit, one of the routes by which such prints reached national collections.
