Toltec Gorge sits along the Denver and Rio Grande Western line in southern Colorado, where the railroad squeezes through a narrow, steep-walled cut in the San Juan foothills. This c1902 photochrom was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced hand-colored-looking views of American scenery using a lithographic process that layered color plates over a photograph. The company's pictures of railroad routes like this one were popular with travelers and promoters, and the print's copyright deposit suggests it was issued as a commercial view of the West.
