Stretched to a long panoramic sheet about 20 inches wide, this Denver view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's photochrom line, a process that built up color from multiple printing stones to give photographs a soft, painted look. Denver had grown from a mining supply town after the gold strikes of 1858 into the commercial center of the high plains, and by the late 1890s it was a common subject in the company's catalog of American cities. The wide format lets the viewer take in the streets and rooftops at once, a record of a city still expanding quickly. The sheet was also registered for copyright, which is why its catalog number and deposit record survive today.
