Sultan Mountain rises in the San Juan Range of southwestern Colorado, near the old mining town of Silverton, and its jagged summit dominates the valley views that Detroit Publishing Company photographers sought out. This print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that used a black-and-white negative transferred to multiple lithographic stones, each hand-inked in a different tint. The Detroit Publishing Company held the American rights to the process and sold such views as souvenirs and travel images around 1898. Its copyright deposit and later placement in the State Historical Society of Colorado's holdings help document how the company promoted the state's scenery.
