Gray's and Torrey's Peaks are a pair of neighboring summits in Colorado's Front Range, both rising above 14,000 feet and named for the American botanists Asa Gray and John Torrey. This color print was made by the Detroit Publishing Company using the photochrom process, a Swiss method that layered several lithographic stones over a photograph to produce vivid, painterly color. Photochroms were popular with travelers and armchair tourists in the late 1890s, and this view shows the mountains as the railroad-era public would have wanted to see them: broad, snow-streaked, and dramatic.
