Cripple Creek sits high in the Rockies of central Colorado, and its name recalls the gold rush that turned a sleepy mountain valley into one of the busiest mining camps in the American West. Gold strikes in the district beginning in 1891 brought a flood of prospectors, saloon keepers and speculators, and the town grew quickly around the mines, with its streets lined by frame buildings and headframes climbing the surrounding hillsides. Worth noticing in a view like this is how completely the landscape was reshaped by the work of extracting ore, a boom that later gave way to labor disputes and the slow decline of the district.
