Marshall Pass, a high crossing of the Continental Divide in central Colorado, is the setting for this hand-colored-looking view, which the Detroit Publishing Company issued as a photochrom print around 1899. The company's photochrom process, a Swiss technique adapted for American use, layered several lithographic stones to build up soft, saturated color over a black-and-white photograph, giving mountain scenery a painterly quality. Marshall Pass was an important stop on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, whose trains climbed these grades, so such prints helped travelers and armchair tourists picture the Rockies. The record notes a copyright deposit, a sign the image was registered for sale as a commercial publication.
