Marshall Pass sits near 10,800 feet on the Continental Divide in Chaffee County, where the high grass and open ridgelines give way to some of the most dramatic railroad country in the state. The pass was crossed by the Denver & Rio Grande's narrow-gauge line, which used switchbacks and tight curves to climb the steep grades, and that engineering drew visitors and photographers from its early years. The record for this picture is brief, but the pass remains a useful place to think about how railroads shaped travel and settlement across Colorado's mountains.
