Red sandstone ridges fold across the foreground of this panoramic view, with a valley opening out beneath them. Colorado's Front Range and Western Slope are known for exposed rock of this kind, where erosion over millions of years has carved fins, spires, and canyon walls into deep red and orange tones. Panoramic views like this one were a favorite of landscape photographers and painters who traveled west in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawn by the scale and color of the terrain. The wide format shows how the ridges step down toward the valley floor, which helps explain why such scenes became so central to the state's image.
