Pikes Peak rises above the red sandstone fins of the Garden of the Gods, a park on the eastern edge of Colorado Springs, and this view frames the mountain through those towering rock formations. The Garden of the Gods was set aside as a public park in 1909 after Charles Elliott Perkins, a railroad executive, donated land and urged that it be preserved. Pikes Peak itself, at more than 14,000 feet, drew explorers and settlers during the 1859 gold rush and later became a famous tourist destination reached by cog railway. Images like this one helped shape the region's reputation as a place where city and wilderness meet.
