This view is taken from Briarhurst, a estate in the resort town of Manitou Springs, looking across the foothills toward Pikes Peak. The mountain rises above 14,000 feet and was named for Zebulon Pike, the army explorer who sighted it in 1806 but never reached its summit. In the late 1800s, Manitou Springs drew visitors to its mineral springs and mountain air, and the peak became a popular destination after a cog railway reached the summit in 1891. The picture shows how the peak looked to those who came to stay in the area's hillside houses.
