Marshall Pass sits high in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado, where the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad crossed the Continental Divide on its line toward Gunnison and the mining country beyond. The track climbed the pass with tight switchbacks and steep grades, which made it one of the more demanding mountain routes in the state for crews and locomotives. Mount Ouray, named for the Ute leader Chief Ouray, rises nearby and anchors the view. Scenes like this one show how the railroad opened the high country to mining, ranching and travel in the late 1800s.
