Boulder, Colorado sits where the Front Range foothills meet the plains, and this 1908 panorama captures the town at a time when it was growing quickly around the University of Colorado, which had opened there in 1877. Panoramic views like this were popular in the early twentieth century, when photographers sold large prints to show off a town's streets, churches and new buildings to residents and visitors alike. Looking across the scene, you can see how the settlement was laid out against the mountains, with the Flatirons rising to the west, a landmark that still defines the city's skyline today.
