Sultan Mountain rises in the San Juan Range of southwestern Colorado, and this photochrom captures its craggy face above a broad valley floor in soft, saturated color. The image was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company around 1898, when the firm was producing hand-tinted views of American scenery for tourists and armchair travelers. Photochrom was a Swiss process that lithographed continuous-tone photographs in multiple color stones, giving the scenery a painterly quality. The print was registered for copyright and deposited with the Library of Congress, and a copy later reached the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
