A 40-horsepower White automobile, labeled as the President's car, appears in this March 1909 news photograph taken in Washington, D.C. The month coincided with the start of a new presidential administration, when official motorcars often drew press attention as symbols of the office. The White Company of Cleveland was one of the leading American makers of steam-powered cars at the time, and the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, distributed images like this one to newspapers. The title comes from the agency's notes on the negative or caption card and has not been independently verified, so the attribution of the car should be read with that caveat.
