The Kyles of Bute, the narrow stretch of water between the Isle of Bute and the Cowal peninsula on Scotland's Firth of Clyde, is the setting here, with Bannatyne as the named place. The view comes from a photochrom print, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that layered several lithographic stones to produce a soft, painterly image. Such prints were sold widely as souvenirs and travel views in the 1890s, when the Clyde coast was a popular destination for steamer excursions. The image offers a useful record of how the shoreline and settlements looked before the twentieth century.
