Ballochmyle Viaduct carries the railway high over the River Ayr near Mauchline in Ayrshire, its tall stone arch framed by wooded banks that make the structure seem to rise out of the trees. Built in the late 1840s for the Glasgow and South Western Railway, the viaduct became a showpiece of Victorian engineering and a familiar sight on the Ayrshire line. This view was made by the photochrom process, which transferred a photograph onto several lithographic stones, each inked in a different color, to produce a color print. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such Scottish views to American buyers around 1900.
