The record gives us a glass negative titled "T.B. hospital," a rare survivor from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. commercial studio that photographed the city and its federal life in the early twentieth century. Its date is only estimated, placed somewhere between 1910 and 1926, based on other negatives in the same run. Tuberculosis was a serious public health problem in that period, and sanatoriums and hospital wards for TB patients were common across the country, so the subject reflects a major concern of the time. The notes also mention streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which are part of the object's physical history.
