The title describes a sailing vessel of about 1840, but the glass negative was made sometime between 1910 and 1926, so the picture records a ship that was already decades old or of an older design when the photographer pressed the shutter. The title came from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been verified, so the vessel's exact age and identity remain uncertain. The 8 by 6 inch glass plate was a common format for commercial work of that era, and the streaks and blemishes visible on it come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
