Alexandria's square honoring Muhammad Ali, the Ottoman-era governor who built a largely independent Egyptian state in the early 1800s, is the setting for this view of his statue. Muhammad Ali, whom the record calls Mehemet Ali, is often seen as the founder of the modern Egyptian state, and his dynasty ruled Egypt until the monarchy ended in 1953. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that sold views of places to travelers and publishers, made many such pictures in Egypt during the 1910s and 1920s. This copy was made from a glass negative, and its streaks and blemishes come from the deterioration of the original coating.
